The February fishing should continue to be steady; whether you are fishing off shore, or off the beach, there will be plenty of fish. Offshore, the sailfish bite should continue to be solid when the stars line up. The weather and wind play a big part in how these fish cooperate with fisherman. Many days in January there were great days of fishing, with heavy northerly winds being in the equation and reports of boats up and down the line with a dozen to two releases in a day. When reports of these catches circulated everybody would rig up and go a day or two later, only to be a day late and a sailfish short, “I do not understand it….. They were biting yesterday!” One angler will say, as the flag hanging from the marina flag pole was showing a steady south wind. Wind, weather, and moon phases play a huge role in fishing; in fact, as well as hunting! If the weather is a little too bumpy off shore, maybe keep the boat a little closer to the beach. There will be plenty of Spanish macs in the surf, along with plenty of blues and back breaking jacks. One fish you might want to target is the elusive pompano. Many

anglers put the pompano at the top of the list of fish to catch and bring home to the table. Just like sailfishing; one day the pompano will be eating in one spot, and next day they are gone. Pompano swim in schools, so once you’ve located them, you can easily get your limit if you are at the right place at the right time. Jigs tipped with shrimp, or a dead or live sand flea, in the surf will get the bite. Another good way to catch these fish is to network; talk to other fisherman up and down the coast. See you on the water.
