Are you ready for some rod bending, reel-screaming action? February is your month! Sail fishing season off Palm Beach is at its peak. Before you head out of the inlet, tune your VHF to channel 19. This is the channel that the charter fleets use to narrow the bite down; it will help you find the fish. Your best bet to catch one of these majestic fish is to fly a live goggle eye under a fishing kite. Keep an eye out on your baits; if you see anything that looks like a trash bag swimming around your gog, it’s probably a hungry sail coming to breakfast. Anglers, if you are skilled to get your fish boat side, please take care reviving your fish to be caught another day. Also keep your eyes peeled for dolphin, kingfish, and wahoo. These fish always show up unexpectedly, so you may want to use a small piece of wire at the end of your leader.
For you fishermen who love to bottom fish, mutton snapper and yellow tails will be moving in to the wrecks this month. Send down a butterflied goggle eye, and you may get lucky and land a hard fighting, great tasting fish.
If the off shore bite becomes slow, head to the beach for some spinner shark action. Spinners will be chasing jacks, blue runners, and bluefish. Catch one of these and send it out on a heft y rod with some slices in it. Be ready for some “Reel Intense” action!
When the wind is blowing too hard for you smaller boats to get off shore, there will be plenty of opportunities to catch fish in the ICW. Tarpon, Spanish mackerel and jacks will be your main target; use live shrimp to fool these fish to your hook.
