Driftfishing on the reef this season is always a mixed bag. There’s a little bit of everything biting out there. Kingfish are probably biting the best right now on the day trips. Drifting out triple hooked ballyhoo or sardine baits are working well, but jigging is the best method to hook into the bigger kings. The oddball blackfin tuna and wahoo will gobble down a whip jig if you’re lucky enough to get the bait close to one, and there have been some around lately. We’re even catching a few sailfish here and there on the day time drift trips. Mahi-mahi can’t be relied up to bite every day, but on a few recent trips, we’ve hit a couple schools of them that swam in on the reef. Like I said, a little bit of everything right now.
Night anchor fishing has been the best for snapper action. A lot of yellowtail and mangroves are being caught. Light tackle with little to no lead always works the best for yellowtailing in a chum slick. The guys fishing a little heavier lead and bigger baits are catching some nice mutton snapper out there also. Groupers are being caught like there’s no tomorrow but with the new regulation, we have to catch and release most grouper species these days. But don’t worry; they’ll be in season again very soon. Excellent drift fishing here in Fort Lauderdale this month with just about every flavor in the sea biting right now, so get out there and do some fishing! Tight lines everybody.
