Surf Fishing Report

Summer is upon us and the surf fishing has slowed some, but there are still fish to be caught from Patrick AFB to Sebastian Inlet. Flat surf conditions still prevail and with them the bait stealing crabs to take off your hook.

The dog days have arrived, but the fishing can be just as hot. Try the shallow flats early and late with top-water plugs to pick a fight with Redfish, Trout, and Snook.

This week was phenomenal on the big lake! It did not seem to matter if you were fishing artificial baits or live wild shiners the catch rate was nearly the same. In some instances we could catch more fish on artificial baits, simply because we were mobile and could move with the fish as they were chasing bait.

You have to be willing to adapt to current conditions in August and they can change from week to week. Tried and proven methods like soaking baits on the bottom are not always the most productive way to go.

The fishing in the Sebastian area in the mid-summer can be some of the best of the year. In past years, August has seen large increases of redfish and trout on the flats of the central lagoon. Hopefully this will be the case this year, because so far this year has been very lack-luster in the case of inshore fishing in the region.

The month of August is here, and fishing along Florida’s Space Coast is guaranteed to be packed full of excitement. Throughout the Banana River, several different species of game fish should be willing to strike both artificial lures and live baits.

It’s hotter than the “Hinges of Hades” this summer and our local water levels never did rise for the spring season. It’s a sure bet we’ll have very low water levels throughout the rest of our summer months as well.

Warm water, low water, dead flat conditions yesterday and too much wind today; I must be in the ‘goon! Sound familiar… said it yourself?

Don’t blink! This month goes by fast. Sure it’s hot, but the fishing can be so good in August you’ll wish we had this heat all the time. Here’s a couple of things to remember in this hot weather. (1) Start early. (2) Drink plenty of fluids.

Rocky shorelines and jetties and many of the docks throughout the port will be great places to find mangrove snapper this month. Live shrimp, pilchards or finger mullet rigged on a small #1 or 1/0 Daiichi bleeding Bait Hook and a split shot for weight is usually all you need to catch some of these tasty fish.
