
On the corner, the tuna fishing is off compared to recent years. Anglers are finding the birds, but are not getting the bites they would like, and the fish are on the smaller size. The few reports I’ve gotten would suggest that these fish found on the edge in water depths of less than 600 feet, are a mix of skipjack, blackfin and small yellowfin.

Schools of Greenies have been thick from the St. Lucie Inlet up to the Black Condos. It is not uncommon to catch Big Kings in shallow while Tarpon fishing off the beaches.

The Ft. Pierce Inlet has been good for the catch and release snook and over the slot reds. They have been taking live baits fished on the bottom.

The cobia are have been accompanied on the beach by several other species including king fish and tarpon. The common denominator for these guys is huge schools of bait fish that have been thick on the beach in the mornings.

The mid-summer season in the Sebastian area is one of stable weather and predictable fishing. This year is right in line with what I would normally expect in the early summer season.

There is however one fishery in our area that can only be classified as “world class”, that being Lake Okeechobee, long known for its excellent bass fishing Okeechobee is still second to none when it comes to catching numbers of fish, or if you are just pursuing the big bass of your lifetime.

Mutton’s are one of the smarter fish out there and will examine bait before they eat it so always make your rigs with care. Stretch your leader on the boat by attaching you hook to a boat cleat and then pull on the leader so there is minimal line memory from being wrapped up on a leader spool.

Last week that same depth of water saw a few blue marlins being hooked up, and a couple were released along with a scattering of sailfish. On those days a fair amount of dolphin were taken along with the billfish.

Turn off your engine and use your trolling motor, or get in front of where they are going and let them come to you. Once the school, either jacks or tarpon, gets spooked and starts moving away from the boat, the chances of catching one goes down.
