OK, so it is August. Weather so hot and muggy you can’t hardly breathe. Well, that is not going to stop bass fisherman on the St. Johns. Simply change your times and method to pattern the summer large mouth.

August is a great month to hit the beach and target the usual suspects tarpon, sharks and jacks. Look for shrimp boats to dump their by catch and get ready to hook into various species of sharks using 7/0 Daiichi circle hooks and a minimum of 80lb.

As August arrives, another one of my favorite months for fishing begins. Vast amounts of bait, hungry fish feeding heavily, and every part of the basin occupied by many of our favorite species.

Don’t blink! This month goes by fast. Sure it’s hot, but the fishing can be so good in August you’ll wish we had this heat all the time. Here’s a couple of things to remember in this hot weather.

With summer ending, fishing offshore Ponce Inlet starts to heat up in August. Kingfish can be found off the beach to 70’ of water north or south of the inlet following the bait pods.

For inshore Tarpon a live back hooked mullet or select shrimp with a Daiichi circle hook will do the job. Look for rolling Tarpon and pitch live mullet or shrimp a few feet in front and hold on.

A breezeless and muggy dawn doesn’t sound very appealing, but to an angler staring into a blood red sun, rising through the mangroves, with redfish tails backlit with the morning light amongst a raft of nervous mullet, conditions are considered perfect!

Near shore artificial reefs and natural live bottom spots in 75’ – 90’ hold some of the best fishing without having to run very far out.

The 2010 El Nino added an uncertainty that left us tracking shrimp troop movements as far South as Haulover Canal back in February. We saw a lot of boat congestion towards the end of April which resulted in several “almost” boat accidents.
