This time of year you will find many types of fish in deeper water or shaded areas. With a variety of species biting right now, it’s best to have a variety of baits to be prepared.

In July the lagoon becomes an intense nursery of baitfish. The grassflats will be choked with pinfish and rafts of mullet will be in the shallows and along the edges of the flats, turning on the summer’s seatrout bite.

Sometimes casting soft plastics with lighter weights along grass edges can be more productive especially in clear water areas. Junebug, blueberry, watermelon, and redbug are all great color choices.

Most fish are in deeper, cooler, water. Only the deepest of shoreline areas will hold any concentrations of fish in most lakes and these areas become stagnant after about 9 a.m.

Crabs and Threadfin seem to be the go to bait right now as the tarpon are her mating. The tarpon are here to mate then head back south so make sure to take into consideration that as big and strong as these fish appear they are a delicate and should be handled with care before releasing them.

Blue gill and shell cracker are still being taken in big numbers, many of the fish are holding around the mouths of the canals where they enter the lake.

Most of the Trout we have been catching are in about 4’ to 6’ of water. I like to fish the edges of pot holes where the bait fish like to hang as this is where trout often ambush their prey.

In the lagoon, early morning is “artificial o’clock”. Bring out the top-water lures, flies or plastic swim baits.
