For the month of August the fishing is excellent as long as you fish the right areas at the right time of day. In the backwaters, the first part of the morning and late afternoon are going to be the best action.

August is for certain one of the warmest months of the year to fish here in the Everglades National Park, however, if you time your day appropriately, is can also be one of your most productive months of fishing.

Hot. That is what the weather is in August but the fishing can be also. Early morning and late afternoon will produce the best bite. Snook will continue to inhabit the passes and adjacent shorelines.

The Oil spill may be having an effect on the Gulf waters here in Southwest Florida, so while generally I would write about the great grouper and snapper fishing – instead I will talk about the predator fish we are seeing.

Another good way to catch snook this time of year is night fishing. There are endless lit up docks with loads of snook waiting for something to eat. Live shrimp tail hooked with a 2/0 circle will be most effective for live bait fishing.

The Tarpon are here now in their best numbers of the year. You can look for them in the shallow grass flats as they are looking to eat during the coolest hours of the day…… morning and evening. I like to toss out a live ladyfish, or large Pilchard on a baitrunner reel.

The best tides are around the new and full moons which fall on the 11th and 25th respectively. These hard falling tides move stir up the bait and can produce crab hatches which turn the tarpon on.

Mangrove snapper will be on the X and north at the ARC Sailboat. The key with these fish is twofold – current and chum. Mix your chum with sand in five gallon buckets so you can “sand ball” these fish.

For the Tarpon, our entire area will have fish. Look on the beaches from Wiggins Pass to Sanibel Island in 12 ft to 30 ft of water.
