KEY WEST

KEY WEST

When writing this forecast the words “happy boy” describes my state of mind. It looks like BP has finally stopped the gusher in the gulf. Great!!!

Summer is here, a fact that is unavoidable after just a few minutes spent outside. As we move into our slower season it gives the locals a chance to unwind and do a little fishing. The temperature climbs and life slows down a bit.

Marathon

Marathon

This year may very well go down in the record books for the banner reef action we’ve been enjoying in the Marathon area. August brings the warmest water temperatures of the year.

Welcome sports fans and fellow anglers, it’s time for your fishing forecast in August.
Flats fisherman should be happy to hear that our elusive silver speedsters have been reappearing in good numbers in July and I would expect this activity to continue and improve throughout August. Yes, I’m talking about bonefish.

Islamorada

Islamorada

Fishing offshore of Islamorada this August should be outstanding. Several species of migratory fish await anglers offshore this time of year such as swordfish, dolphin, blackfin tuna, sailfish and even a few blue and white marlin.

Key Largo

Key Largo

As of writing this article, the well is finally under control; for now. If everything remains on schedule the well should be sealed with concrete by sometime in mid-August.

FLAMINGO

FLAMINGO

As August approaches we will see the water temperatures rising to the point of driving the bonefish off the flats. This will be during the middle of the day and the permit will be showing more and more as the waters warm.

Port Charlotte & Punta Gorda

Port Charlotte & Punta Gorda

This month, don’t forget American red snapper closes on the 24th unless they close it early on us. The gag grouper should start to move offshore. It is late for that to happen but last month they were still in 40 to 50ft. of water.

When offshore keep an eye out for big marlin. Small dolphin are a perfect little snack for a big blue. I have a 50-wide on board rigged with heavy leader and a circle hook.

I’m still looking to see more bonefish on the flats, but still have not since last report. A few have been taken late in the daylight hours on shrimp, but that action has been slow.
